Definition of a Clinical Neuropsychologist
The
Division of Clinical Neuropsychology of the APA has published several
definitions of the criteria one must meet to use the term "Clinical
Neuropsychologist". The most recent definition, which is meant to
apply to all individuals entering the specialty after January 1, 1996, is
as follows:
A
Clinical Neuropsychologist is a professional psychologist who applies
principles of assessment and intervention based upon the scientific
study of human behavior as it relates to normal and abnormal functioning
of the central nervous system.
The
Clinical Neuropsychologist is a doctoral-level psychology provider of
diagnostic and intervention services who has demonstrated competence in
the application of such principles for human welfare following:
|
A.
Successful completion of systematic didactic
and experiential training in neuropsychology
and neuroscience in
full-time residence at a
regionally accredited university;
B. Two or more years of appropriate full-time
supervised training by a Clinical
Neuropsychologist applying
neuropsychological
services in a clinical
setting.
C. Licensing or certification to provide
psychological services to the public by laws
of the state or province in which he or
she
practices;
D. Review by one's peers as a test of these
competences.
|
To
determine if a particular person meets the requirements of this
Definition, it is necessary that specialists in Clinical Neuropsychology
individually review a person's training, experience, credentials,
and work products. Attainment of board certification in Clinical
Neuropsychology ... is the clearest evidence that all of these criteria
have been met.
